GolfWRXers put the Full Swing KIT’s accuracy to the test https://www.golfwrx.com/718131/golfwrxers-put-the-full-swing-kits-accuracy-to-the-test/ https://www.golfwrx.com/718131/golfwrxers-put-the-full-swing-kits-accuracy-to-the-test/#comments Mon, 10 Jul 2023 13:55:01 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=718131 Last month, four GolfWRX forum members traveled to The Grand Golf Club at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego, California, to test the Full Swing KIT launch monitor and to see how it stacks up against other launch monitors. If you’re not familiar with the Full Swing KIT, development began when Tiger Woods requested a launch monitor he could trust on the range as much as he trusted his Full Swing simulator in his own home. Later, the KIT earned Tiger’s seal of approval and has been seen with him at every tournament he’s played in since its release.

Check out the video below to see if the KIT can earn the seal of approval from our four WRXers — @zap311, @double or triple?, @hatrick11, and @SwingBlues — just like it did from Tiger Woods himself.

GolfWRX members on the KIT’s accuracy

zap311: “The Full Swing team seems obsessed with accuracy when it comes to the KIT – The team talked about how this product officially shipped about 18 months ago and they are already on firmware release #20. They said they are regularly releasing updates (overnight via WiFi) to continuously improve accuracy and performance. That is pretty awesome and it’s nice to hear that they are not a company that “ships it” and moves to the next thing. I think they are on the right track since I saw virtually no differences in the data when testing vs. GCQuad and Trackman today.”

double or triple?: “In some cases the difference was less than half a degree on launch and less than 50 rpms on spin.”

hatrick11: “The differences were statistically nonexistent. I think it’s hard to believe for a lot of people when you think about the huge price disparity, but I can’t state enough how close the Full Swing was to trackman every single time, for each of us.”

“Outside, the data is just really really accurate. I know my numbers and know this particular range very well and the KIT was spot on all day. I also had some very variable quality golf balls in the bucket I hit and there was really only one spin rate in the whole session that had me raising my eyebrows at all.”

SwingBlues: “The GolfWRX Full Swing/WRX Experience showed Full Swing KIT produce numbers the same as the GC Quad (GC4) and the Trackman4. Dollar wise, both LMs are easily north of KIT, so this is HUGE to stand up there with the bigger boys on the Podium. For me, it seems more “apples to apples” to compare KIT to GC3. My own testing validates what we saw at the Experience. It shows critical data points like spin, carry, ball speeds are dead on or almost dead on for 40 yards and up on both GC3 and KIT.”

More on the Full Swing KIT

zap311: “The versatility of viewing data is impressive – Depending on usage, everyone has different preferences for viewing data. You have on-device, phone, tablet, monitor, smartwatch, or audio/headphones. I’m pleased to say that Full Swing covers all of these. You can use the app on iOS devices (they said Android is planned for the future). This includes viewing your last shot on the Apple Watch with a few options and turning on audio playback of your preferred metrics following each shot. I’ll post screenshots of this later. You can also choose between 4 data points or 1 data point on the device itself. It was easy to use the app to customize the top 4. For example, I was able to quickly change from launch angle on irons to swing path on driver.

“The KIT was very easy to use – Once you spend a few minutes learning the app and settings, it is very simple to select a club, line up the target line, and fire away. You don’t have to use a level or a laser to line up. KIT uses the built-in camera to tell you where to line up within the app or on-device screen. I was also able to boot up the KIT in less than a minute and drop it down on the tee box for our on-course trial today. Because of this simplicity, I can see it being more practical to bring to the course…

“The Full Swing team really thought through usability for the KIT. You can see up to four data points on the device’s OLED screen. You can see all 16 data points on your iPhone/iPad along with a video replay of the shot, you can view one primary metric from your Apple Watch, and you can enable audio playback for any of the 16 data points. For me, this was a dream as a full iOS user. One other feature I like is that you can star a particular shot to save it. You can also send shot data + the video recording to your coach if you want.”

double or triple?: “I was able to meet the teaching pro at the range I’m using for testing – PGA teacher/member Ryan Kolk. He and his team have 4 units amongst themselves and use them both personally and with their students during lessons. Ryan spent time dialing in his knowledge of the range balls vs proV1x (gamer) to better understand the FSK and he believes the consistency is there with the FSK and within trackman and GC/Foresight models. His preference is to use FSK while testing shafts and new product before using them in his personal playing bag which as a GolfWRX member is 100% appreciated. For his better students, he believes the information like Face to Path and Club Path that FullSwing Kit offers is great to help them understand what their swing is doing and use that information to better themselves.”

hatrick11: “It’s nice to know I can get super useful practice sessions in at my house, and can do in in ~20 min stints; with two little kids at home I can’t just go out for frequent or lengthy range sessions, so this is super valuable and I think will help me keep my game from degrading and allow me to spend my limited free time enjoying the occasional round with friends. In particular with the KIT, as opposed to the cheaper monitors or the other “mid tiers” like GC3, seeing path and face-to-path data is the key item that makes my practice sessions useful…when I am grooving it my path is almost always between 0-2* out to in, with face control being the main thing I need to work on. When my game goes sideways I start coming more in to out, and combined with face consistency being an ongoing issue, that brings the bad left miss into play. Previously I have struggled getting real use out of net practice, because the feels don’t always match reality. This data and video evidence really helps keep me honest, so it was great to see that I was eventually able to get that piece dialed in with KIT.”

SwingBlues: “One feature I am really starting to like is how easy to see the video of each shot. My buddy was not hitting it well, we went to the video and we could see the takeway was too far to the outside.”

“Using the app, it will display all 16 data points. Below is an example of one of my iron shots. Pretty impressive data captured by KIT. On KIT itself, the launch monitor display can be configured to show a single data point, or it can show a grid of 4 data points where the golfer choose which ones to display!”

It’s that sense of community that drives day-to-day interactions in the forums on topics that range from best driver to what marker you use to mark your ball. It even allows us to share another thing we all love – buying and selling equipment.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, there is a listing for a Snake Eyes MB1 Smith & Wesson iron set

From the seller (@deejaid): “Snake Eyes MB1 Smith & Wesson Iron Set 3-PW. These are new old stock, in mint condition. The 3,4,5,7,8,9 irons are all-original, never hit. The 6 and 10 (pitching wedge) were refinished and rechromed heads. All clubs have True Temper R300 shafts. The step pattern looks slightly different between the original clubs and the refinished with the Dynamic Gold, so not sure what exact model the stock irons have. The 10-iron also shows a slight blemish near one of the scoring lines of the face, see the last photo. Here is your chance to get this highly sought after set of irons in new condition, you won’t find another set like this. $825 shipped to lower 48.”

Knudson vs. Tursky: “3-Club Challenge” (with a Ben Hogan driver from the 1960s) https://www.golfwrx.com/718185/knudson-vs-tursky-3-club-challenge-with-a-ben-hogan-driver-from-the-1960s/ https://www.golfwrx.com/718185/knudson-vs-tursky-3-club-challenge-with-a-ben-hogan-driver-from-the-1960s/#respond Fri, 07 Jul 2023 16:59:01 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=718185 Recently, ahead of the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, GolfWRX.com’s “Two Guys Talking Golf” podcast hosts Brian Knudson and Andrew Tursky played a 3-Club Challenge at Rackham Golf Course in Huntington Woods, Michigan.

Tursky, as a scratch golfer, used a 3-club set, while Knudson, a 9-handicapper, used his full bag.

The rules were simple: Play a 9-hole match play at Rackham’s back nine. Every time Tursky makes a par or birdie, he gets to add a club to the bag. Every time Tursky makes a double bogey or worse, he removes a club from the bag.

The catch was that Knudson got to pick the clubs that Tursky had to use, and he didn’t make things easy. Knudson had Tursky start with a Ben Hogan persimmon driver with a steel shaft, a Ben Hogan Apex blade 7-iron with a G-Loomis IMX Boron shaft, and a Cleveland RTX ZipCore “Sip Groove” 52-degree promotional wedge, with an extremely light swing weight.

Check out the full match (plus a bonus double-or-nothing 18th hole!) in the video at the top of the page.

“With our first-generation Edison Forged wedges, we reacted to customer demand and made those clubheads available to the vast network of do-it-yourself club builders on our website,” said Terry Koehler, Edison founder and Director of Innovation. “We are pleased to now offer these discriminating golfers an option to be able to build their own clubs with our remarkable new Edison 2.0 wedge heads.”

    About Edison 2.0 wedges

New five-times forged, Edison 2.0 wedges continue to position more mass higher in the clubhead. Owing to a multi-level back design, an additional 14-17 grams of weight have been positioned higher in the clubhead for improved smash factor across the face, particularly on shots struck higher in the face and toward the toe of the club. This is particularly helpful on full shots, Koehler says, as most amateurs wedge shots miss high and short.

Edison 2.0 wedges are also equipped with an improved version of the Koehler Sole, which Koehler originally patented over 30 years ago. Both high and low bounce areas are built into the wedge for maximum versatility and performance across a variety of swing paths.

SPOTTED: Callaway’s new 2023 Apex MB irons https://www.golfwrx.com/717904/spotted-callaways-new-2023-apex-mb-irons/ https://www.golfwrx.com/717904/spotted-callaways-new-2023-apex-mb-irons/#comments Mon, 03 Jul 2023 21:52:36 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=717904 Is Callaway plotting on releasing a new family of Apex irons? Judging by what we’re seeing on the PGA Tour, it seems that the new, highly-anticipated  Apex irons could be on the horizon.

Ahead of the recent 2023 Travelers Championship, GolfWRX.com spotted a new Callaway Apex CB 4-iron in Adam Svensson’s WITB.

This week, ahead of the 2023 John Deere, GolfWRX.com spotted yet another new Apex iron – this time, we photographed Carl Yuan with an entire set of Apex MB 2023 irons.

Here’s what the 7-iron looks like from address…

Also, as Mav McNealy popularized within his custom set of Callaway MB 1-of-1 prototype irons, it appears that the Apex MB set may include a 10-iron. Or, at least, the company made an Apex MB 10-iron available to Yuan.

It’s likely that the “10” iron is just alternative nomenclature for “pitching wedge,” but we’ve yet to hear from the Callaway camp about the new irons. For now, we’re simply left to speculate using photos of the new Apex MB and CB irons for 2023.

We’ll update you with more information about the Apex 2023 lineup as it becomes available. Until then, click here for more photos and GolfWRX Forum member discussion.

The 27-year-old professional golfer from Ohio won the third annual John Shippen Invitational – an event that hosts Black pros and amateurs from across the world – on Sunday at Detroit Golf Club to earn a spot in the Rocket Mortgage (and pocket the $20K prize).

“I really worked hard the last year and a half to fine tune some things since I lost my Korn Ferry card, and it’s been paying off over and over again,” Johnson said in a press conference on Tuesday. “Honestly, the last year I’ve gotten a lot of support from my parents, my fiancée and a lot of close-knit people that I’m in constant contact with. They know who they are. It’s been a long journey since I lost my card and we’re on the up and up and I’m excited to be back and have another chance.”

Johnson then continued his memorable week by making the cut on Friday, and PGA Tour cameras were there to capture the heart-warming moments with his family after making his first-ever PGA Tour cut. Check out the video embedded below:

On Wednesday, prior to Rocket Mortgage, GolfWRX.com and the PGA Tour caught up with Johnson to check out the equipment he has in the bag.

As we uncovered, the Cobra staffer uses Cobra’s Rev33 RF Proto copper-colored blade irons that were designed specifically for Rickie Fowler. Funny enough, Fowler no longer uses the irons himself, which makes Johnson the only PGA Tour player currently using the eye-catching iron models.

As Johnson explains in the video above, he also recently switched into a Cobra King Prototype 7-wood with rails added to the sole for better turf interaction (fellow Cobra staffer Gary Woodland also began employing the prototype fairway wood head at the 2023 PGA Championship).

GolfWRX didn’t just get a look at Johnson’s clubs, though. He also showed off his lucky ball marker from St. Andrews, and his custom Harry Potter-inspired “Ravenclaw” divot tool.

Ravenclaws are known for their intelligence, creativity, and wisdom. Apparently, Ravenclaws are also known for making cuts in PGA Tour events, too.

Chris Kirk explains his unique Callaway prototype wedge (and how black irons help) https://www.golfwrx.com/717511/chris-kirk-explains-his-unique-callaway-prototype-wedge-and-how-black-irons-help/ https://www.golfwrx.com/717511/chris-kirk-explains-his-unique-callaway-prototype-wedge-and-how-black-irons-help/#comments Thu, 29 Jun 2023 12:49:09 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=717511 On Wednesday at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, GolfWRX.com spotted a unique Callaway Jaws prototype wedge in Chris Kirk’s bag. If you take a closer look at the back weight ports, you’ll notice there’s been some tiny manipulations to the metal.

We caught up with the Callaway staffer on Wednesday to get the lowdown on what’s different about the wedge, and why he wants it that way.

“It’s a new prototype that they just made for me a few weeks ago,” Kirk explained. “A lot of times when they [build me a new wedge], they’ll make it a swing weight heavy just in case I need to adjust it at all. I spent a few weeks just kind of messing around with it, chipping, and getting a feel for the sole of it. I didn’t feel like I needed to change anything, so they just buzzed some weight off the back. It was really, really good as is.

“I want my wedges D4 and my irons D3. That’s how I’ve done it for a while now. I’m pretty particular about everything – I can tell you almost all of my specs right off the top of my head.

“I use S200’s in my wedges and Project X LZ 6.5’s in my irons, so there’s a little tiny weight difference, but not much. I still like the wedges to feel just a touch heavier at D4.”

GolfWRX also asked Kirk about his Callaway Apex MB irons, and why he prefers the black look instead of chrome.

“For some reason I have always hit darker irons better. If you had a chrome version of my irons, and then looked at mine, mine would look significantly smaller, even though they’re not. I don’t know why that is, but I want my irons to look as small as possible. So that’s the reasoning for it.

“I just feel like if you give me a cavity back iron, I’m going to hit it all over the face. And if you give me a teeny blade, I’m going to flush it. I’ve always been that way.”

Check out more photos of Kirk’s bag at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic here
