Knudson vs. Tursky: “3-Club Challenge” (with a Ben Hogan driver from the 1960s)

Recently, ahead of the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic, GolfWRX.com’s “Two Guys Talking Golf” podcast hosts Brian Knudson and Andrew Tursky played a 3-Club Challenge at Rackham Golf Course in Huntington Woods, Michigan.

Tursky, as a scratch golfer, used a 3-club set, while Knudson, a 9-handicapper, used his full bag.

The rules were simple: Play a 9-hole match play at Rackham’s back nine. Every time Tursky makes a par or birdie, he gets to add a club to the bag. Every time Tursky makes a double bogey or worse, he removes a club from the bag.

The catch was that Knudson got to pick the clubs that Tursky had to use, and he didn’t make things easy. Knudson had Tursky start with a Ben Hogan persimmon driver with a steel shaft, a Ben Hogan Apex blade 7-iron with a G-Loomis IMX Boron shaft, and a Cleveland RTX ZipCore “Sip Groove” 52-degree promotional wedge, with an extremely light swing weight.

As a refresher VeloCore technology is a multi-material bias core construction technique designed to deliver stability through transition and impact to maximize clubhead MOI. Shafts feature full-length, ultra-high modulus pitch 70 ton carbon fiber, which is 150-percent stronger and more stable than T1100g and 40 ton bias layers for feel.

According to Fujikura, Axiom shafts deliver increased ball speeds from better and more consistent center-face contact and produce tighter dispersion.

GolfWRXers and club building geeks will doubtless be interested in another unique element of Axiom. As Fujikura’s product and brand manager, Spencer Reynolds, explains, tipping is totally different with these shafts.

Welcome to The Dunvegan Hotel in St. Andrews, arguably the most famous golf pub and 19th hole in the world. Just 112 yards from the 18th green at The Old Course at St. Andrews, the Dunvegan has been the unofficial bar/restaurant of St. Andrews for decades.

Recently, during the 150th Open Championship, GolfWRX stopped in to say hello, taste a pint of Dunvegan beer, eat fish and chips (I actually ate the Steak Pie, which was delicious), and get a full tour of the historical drinking spot.

While we were there, longtime owners Sheena and Jack Willoughby were gracious enough to sit down with me and tell stories about the bar’s history, some of its famous patrons (like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Arnold Palmer and many others), and tell some untold stories from inside the Dunvegan.

If you’ve ever been to the Dunvegan, then you know the walls are covered in photographs and memorabilia that tell stories about the bar’s history. If you’ve never been there, then hopefully the video helps you live vicariously, as Sheena and Jack took the time to make some of the stories come to life in our recent tour and sit down.

My personal favorite story, as highlighted in our recent TikTok video below, Rory McIlroy used to come into the Dunvegan in his younger days, where he unsuccessfully tried to go “incognito,” despite his trademark bushy black curls.
