GolfWRXers put the Full Swing KIT’s accuracy to the test https://www.golfwrx.com/718131/golfwrxers-put-the-full-swing-kits-accuracy-to-the-test/ https://www.golfwrx.com/718131/golfwrxers-put-the-full-swing-kits-accuracy-to-the-test/#comments Mon, 10 Jul 2023 13:55:01 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=718131 Last month, four GolfWRX forum members traveled to The Grand Golf Club at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego, California, to test the Full Swing KIT launch monitor and to see how it stacks up against other launch monitors. If you’re not familiar with the Full Swing KIT, development began when Tiger Woods requested a launch monitor he could trust on the range as much as he trusted his Full Swing simulator in his own home. Later, the KIT earned Tiger’s seal of approval and has been seen with him at every tournament he’s played in since its release.

Check out the video below to see if the KIT can earn the seal of approval from our four WRXers — @zap311, @double or triple?, @hatrick11, and @SwingBlues — just like it did from Tiger Woods himself.

GolfWRX members on the KIT’s accuracy

zap311: “The Full Swing team seems obsessed with accuracy when it comes to the KIT – The team talked about how this product officially shipped about 18 months ago and they are already on firmware release #20. They said they are regularly releasing updates (overnight via WiFi) to continuously improve accuracy and performance. That is pretty awesome and it’s nice to hear that they are not a company that “ships it” and moves to the next thing. I think they are on the right track since I saw virtually no differences in the data when testing vs. GCQuad and Trackman today.”

double or triple?: “In some cases the difference was less than half a degree on launch and less than 50 rpms on spin.”

hatrick11: “The differences were statistically nonexistent. I think it’s hard to believe for a lot of people when you think about the huge price disparity, but I can’t state enough how close the Full Swing was to trackman every single time, for each of us.”

“Outside, the data is just really really accurate. I know my numbers and know this particular range very well and the KIT was spot on all day. I also had some very variable quality golf balls in the bucket I hit and there was really only one spin rate in the whole session that had me raising my eyebrows at all.”

SwingBlues: “The GolfWRX Full Swing/WRX Experience showed Full Swing KIT produce numbers the same as the GC Quad (GC4) and the Trackman4. Dollar wise, both LMs are easily north of KIT, so this is HUGE to stand up there with the bigger boys on the Podium. For me, it seems more “apples to apples” to compare KIT to GC3. My own testing validates what we saw at the Experience. It shows critical data points like spin, carry, ball speeds are dead on or almost dead on for 40 yards and up on both GC3 and KIT.”

More on the Full Swing KIT

zap311: “The versatility of viewing data is impressive – Depending on usage, everyone has different preferences for viewing data. You have on-device, phone, tablet, monitor, smartwatch, or audio/headphones. I’m pleased to say that Full Swing covers all of these. You can use the app on iOS devices (they said Android is planned for the future). This includes viewing your last shot on the Apple Watch with a few options and turning on audio playback of your preferred metrics following each shot. I’ll post screenshots of this later. You can also choose between 4 data points or 1 data point on the device itself. It was easy to use the app to customize the top 4. For example, I was able to quickly change from launch angle on irons to swing path on driver.

“The KIT was very easy to use – Once you spend a few minutes learning the app and settings, it is very simple to select a club, line up the target line, and fire away. You don’t have to use a level or a laser to line up. KIT uses the built-in camera to tell you where to line up within the app or on-device screen. I was also able to boot up the KIT in less than a minute and drop it down on the tee box for our on-course trial today. Because of this simplicity, I can see it being more practical to bring to the course…

“The Full Swing team really thought through usability for the KIT. You can see up to four data points on the device’s OLED screen. You can see all 16 data points on your iPhone/iPad along with a video replay of the shot, you can view one primary metric from your Apple Watch, and you can enable audio playback for any of the 16 data points. For me, this was a dream as a full iOS user. One other feature I like is that you can star a particular shot to save it. You can also send shot data + the video recording to your coach if you want.”

double or triple?: “I was able to meet the teaching pro at the range I’m using for testing – PGA teacher/member Ryan Kolk. He and his team have 4 units amongst themselves and use them both personally and with their students during lessons. Ryan spent time dialing in his knowledge of the range balls vs proV1x (gamer) to better understand the FSK and he believes the consistency is there with the FSK and within trackman and GC/Foresight models. His preference is to use FSK while testing shafts and new product before using them in his personal playing bag which as a GolfWRX member is 100% appreciated. For his better students, he believes the information like Face to Path and Club Path that FullSwing Kit offers is great to help them understand what their swing is doing and use that information to better themselves.”

hatrick11: “It’s nice to know I can get super useful practice sessions in at my house, and can do in in ~20 min stints; with two little kids at home I can’t just go out for frequent or lengthy range sessions, so this is super valuable and I think will help me keep my game from degrading and allow me to spend my limited free time enjoying the occasional round with friends. In particular with the KIT, as opposed to the cheaper monitors or the other “mid tiers” like GC3, seeing path and face-to-path data is the key item that makes my practice sessions useful…when I am grooving it my path is almost always between 0-2* out to in, with face control being the main thing I need to work on. When my game goes sideways I start coming more in to out, and combined with face consistency being an ongoing issue, that brings the bad left miss into play. Previously I have struggled getting real use out of net practice, because the feels don’t always match reality. This data and video evidence really helps keep me honest, so it was great to see that I was eventually able to get that piece dialed in with KIT.”

SwingBlues: “One feature I am really starting to like is how easy to see the video of each shot. My buddy was not hitting it well, we went to the video and we could see the takeway was too far to the outside.”

“Using the app, it will display all 16 data points. Below is an example of one of my iron shots. Pretty impressive data captured by KIT. On KIT itself, the launch monitor display can be configured to show a single data point, or it can show a grid of 4 data points where the golfer choose which ones to display!”

Centurion Club had a respectable turnout of fans on site, with plenty following the big-hitting Dechambeau.

At one point, a fan reached out to fist bump the former U.S. Open champion but didn’t quite reach. The Crushers GC, of which Bryson captains, made a light-hearted post on Instagram with a video of the moment.

DeChambeau commented on the post, “just a couple inches short…”

The 29-year-old will tee it up next at the 151st Open Championship at Royal Liverpool. He had success at the Open Championship hosted by St. Andrews last year, finishing in 8th place.

Over the weekend, Daly found himself in some social media controversy once again, although it was no fault of his own.

A popular TikTok account, @cookingwith_darryl, mentioned a drink he called the “John Daly” in one of his videos. The food connoisseur has gotten very popular on the app by posting videos while cooking on his Blackstone grill.

“In my opinion there are two drinks synonymous with golf. You want to argue with me? Bring it! One is the Transfusion, the other is the John Daly. Let’s make the perfect John Daly.”

Darryl then went on to explain the ingredients: A chilled glass, vodka, and equal parts lemonade and iced tea.

    @cookingwithdarryl Another classic drink for the golf course…The John Daly #drinks #golf #rukiddingme #rhoback ? original sound – dpostelnick

However, the TikTok users in the comment section were furious with the content creator, saying the drink he described was an “Arnold Palmer,” not a “John Daly.”

Darryl was sure to point out the very important distinction between the two: the “John Daly” contains vodka and “Arnold Palmer” does not.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, there is a listing for a Snake Eyes MB1 Smith & Wesson iron set

From the seller (@deejaid): “Snake Eyes MB1 Smith & Wesson Iron Set 3-PW. These are new old stock, in mint condition. The 3,4,5,7,8,9 irons are all-original, never hit. The 6 and 10 (pitching wedge) were refinished and rechromed heads. All clubs have True Temper R300 shafts. The step pattern looks slightly different between the original clubs and the refinished with the Dynamic Gold, so not sure what exact model the stock irons have. The 10-iron also shows a slight blemish near one of the scoring lines of the face, see the last photo. Here is your chance to get this highly sought after set of irons in new condition, you won’t find another set like this. $825 shipped to lower 48.”

The Erie County (NY) Amateur was played at the course where I learned the game, and a collegiate named Ryan Edholm posted 59 on Sunday, to win by eight shots. I was glued to the feed, and jumped up when I saw them finalize the score.

To the tours! The USGA celebrated its Women’s Open championship at storied Pebble Beach Golf Links this week, and the USA was treated to prime-time golf viewing for a second consecutive, national championship. Neither the competitors nor the golf course disappointed, and it is a pleasure to provide an extended look at the tournament. The PGA Tour visited TPC Deere Run in Illinois, while the DP World Tour found a home in Denmark. Let’s have a look at how each event concluded, with this week’s Tour Rundown.

USGA/LPGA: Corpuz arrives from nowhere to claim United States Open title

If you hurry up and check Allisen Corpuz’s wiki page, you’ll see the one professional win on her record is the Hawaii Women’s State Open. Venerable an event as it is, it’s not an LPGA-calibre title, nor even a Symetra Tour win. Even more important, she won that event when she was all of 16 years of age, so she wasn’t even a pro! After schooling at Southern Cal and a stint on the 2021 USA Curtis Cup side, Corpuz turned pro, and earned two top-three finishes in her first two years on tour.

Forgive us for a moment if we talk about that other wain who won her first tour event in her first tour start. Yup, Rose Zhang was at Pebble Beach, but she only finished one-over par and only tied for 9th position. What did Corpuz do? She won the whole thing, lock, stock and barrel. Corpuz began the week 69-70 to not only make the cut, but earn herself a final-pair spot with Bailey Tardy on Saturday. While Tardy struggled to a 75, AC held it together and posted a fine 71. Her reward was a second-consecutive day in the final duo, this time with the on-fire Nasa Hataoka. Hataoka delivered a 66, the only score below 70 on the day. That’s one hot round.

Hataoka had been here before. She finished runner-up in two other major championships, and was eager to shelve the mantel of almost and replace it with certain. Sunday was not her day, however, and she struggled to five bogeys and a birdie, a 76, and a tie for fourth with the aforementioned Bailey Tardy. Tardy came back from her 75 with a 73, earning a top-five major placement.

Back to Corpuz. The lass from Honolulu made six birdies on the day. She began with stroke-savers on holes one and three, then made bogeys at four and nine, along with another birdie at seven. She turned in one-under 35, and began to put distance between herself and the field. Then came Charley Hull, and things began to change.

Hull found the same flint that Hataoka encountered on day three. The English pro made birdie at four of her first five holes, and turned in 32. Three birdies against one bogey on the inward half gave her a 66, the low round of the day. Her reward was a tie for second spot with another Sunday Queen, Jiyai Shin of Korea. Shin signed for 68 and reached the same, 6-under par total as Hull. No one, on this day, would track Allisen down.

Corpuz put the doubters to bed with three birdies over the first seven holes on the vaunted, back nine at Pebble Beach. A meaningless bogey at 17 meant that her margin of victory was reduced to three strokes. After safely walking the final fairway, Corpuz was an LPGA tour winner, a major champion and, in all likelihood, a member of Team USA in Spain’s 2023 Solheim Cup matches.

PGA Tour: Straka survives double bogey at last for second tour title

Josef Straka (no intel on how he earned the nickname “Sepp”) had golf social media ablaze this afternoon. He turned for home in 28 shots, and still had more in the tank. His front-nine eagle and five birdies were followed by four consecutive chirps from 11 to 14. Folks were talking 60, 59, 58. All that the boy from Austria had to do, was dock the boat. Well, he didn’t, finding water on 18 and a double bogey. He finished four days in Silvia at 21-under par, and didn’t think for a moment, that it would hold up.

Until it did. Neither Brendan Todd nor Alex Smalley could close with anything spicey, and Ludvig Aberg started too far back for his 63 to give him a shot. Todd and Smalley tied for second at 19-under par, with the precocious Aberg another stroke back, tied for 4th with Adam Schenk. It was Straka in the end, whose final-round 62 held up. Now, it’s off to Scotland for many, as preparations begin for the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool.

DP World Tour: Second Chance for Højgaard in home country

Rasmus Højgaard did nothing right down the stretch of the Made in HimmerLand stop on the DPWT. He finished well ahead of the leaders, and began to applaud his home-country fans for their presence. Then, Nacho Elvira and Richie Ramsey forgot how to finish the tournament, and just like that, Højgaard found himself in a playoff with Elvira for the title. We’ll get to the playoff (all six holes of it) in a moment. How did we get there?

Højgaard had himself a weekend, to the tune of 65-64. For a time, he thought that his 129 over the final two days would earn him a top-three finish, until tires started falling off. Elvira played his final six holes in plus-one, with three bogeys against two birdies. Robert MacIntyre stood three-under on the day, when his tee shot on 14 nearly went OOB. Six shots later, he posted a triple bogey on his card, added another bogey, and missed overtime by two shots. For Richie Ramsay, the knife cut the deepest. He had quietly worked his way to the top spot, only to see all his day’s efforts undone with a watery double at the 72nd hole. He finished solo third.

So it was left to the astonished Højgaard and the Spanish Elvira, to settle matters on the 18th hole … and the 18th hole … and the 18th hole again. Six times they returned to the final teeing ground, and five times, each man made par. On the sixth go-round, Elvira cracked and Rasmus claimed his fourth DPWT title. Three have come in playoffs — Luke Donald, you paying attention?

Tursky, as a scratch golfer, used a 3-club set, while Knudson, a 9-handicapper, used his full bag.

The rules were simple: Play a 9-hole match play at Rackham’s back nine. Every time Tursky makes a par or birdie, he gets to add a club to the bag. Every time Tursky makes a double bogey or worse, he removes a club from the bag.

The catch was that Knudson got to pick the clubs that Tursky had to use, and he didn’t make things easy. Knudson had Tursky start with a Ben Hogan persimmon driver with a steel shaft, a Ben Hogan Apex blade 7-iron with a G-Loomis IMX Boron shaft, and a Cleveland RTX ZipCore “Sip Groove” 52-degree promotional wedge, with an extremely light swing weight.

Check out the full match (plus a bonus double-or-nothing 18th hole!) in the video at the top of the page.

‘Heartbreaking’ – Matt Wolff responds after being blasted by LIV teammate Brooks Koepka https://www.golfwrx.com/718162/heartbreaking-matt-wolff-responds-after-being-blasted-by-liv-teammate-brooks-koepka/ https://www.golfwrx.com/718162/heartbreaking-matt-wolff-responds-after-being-blasted-by-liv-teammate-brooks-koepka/#comments Fri, 07 Jul 2023 13:17:14 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=718162 Yesterday, Smash GC captain Brooks Koepka publicly blasted his teammate Matthew Wolff in an interview with Sports Illustrated.

“I mean, when you quit on your round, you give up and stuff like that, that’s not competing,” said Koepka. “I’m not a big fan of that. You don’t work hard. It’s very tough. It’s very tough to have even like a team dynamic when you’ve got one guy that won’t work, one guy is not going to give any effort, he’s going to quit on the course, break clubs, gets down, bad body language, it’s very tough. I’ve basically given up on him—a lot of talent, but I mean the talent’s wasted.”

On Friday morning, Wolff issued his response to Koepka via Sports Illustrated.

The 24-year-old said it was “beyond disappointing” to read Koepka’s comments.

“I read the SI interview with our Captain Brooks Koepka and it was beyond disappointing to me. When I chose to join his Team in 2023, I did so with much optimism about my new home as part of Team Smash and equally as important the chance to be around and learn from a player of Brooks’s stature. Like everyone who has ever played the game at the highest level, I have had competitive moments in the past that I feel I have let myself down and even others in our new team environment. This has been quite difficult for me. My challenges on and off the golf course with my mental health has been well documented. I deal with those challenges every day.

“However, while my 2023 season has not been all I had hoped for to this point, I have made positive strides in managing my life and feel Ike my game is turning for the positive. To hear through the media that our team leader has given up on me is heartbreaking. It’s not what a team member looks to hear from its leader, and I think we all know these comments should have been handled much differently. But I’m moving forward and won’t ever give up on myself. While on course results may not appear now to be positive indicators, I’m trying to win an even BIGGER game with my life.

“Finally, I trust Brooks wants what is best for our team. But it’s hard to imagine his comments in his recent SI interview in any way line up with those priorities. This will be my last comment on this matter. I’m heading out today to the Centurion Club trying to help our team win this week. I appreciate everyone’s continued support and your respect for my privacy.”

Both Koepka and Wolff will be teeing it up at Centurion Club on Friday. Koepka will be playing with Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson, while Wolff will play alongside his fellow Smash GC teammates (minus the captain) Chase Koepka and Jason Kokrak.

Good Friday morning, golf fans, as day two of the Women’s US Open and John Deere Classic get underway.

    1. Joint leaders at Pebble

AP Report…”Pebble Beach was everything the best women golfers in the world imagined for the first U.S. Women’s Open with its raw beauty, marine layer and chill in the air.”

    • “For some of them, it was a sheer beast.”
    • Xiyu Janet Lin and Hyo Joo Kim could soak up the scenery, each of them with a 4-under 68 on Thursday to share the lead after one round of a historic week on one of the most famous golf courses in America.”
    • “We’re part of the history. It’s really cool,” Lin said. “I kind of told myself no matter what, this is going to be a memorable week.”
    Full piece.

    2. Why it means so much

Golfweek’s Beth Ann Nichols…”The 78th U.S. Women’s Open is, first and foremost, a celebration. Historians might look back on this championship a century from now and consider it the most consequential in Women’s Open in history.”

    • “For starters, it’s being staged on a course many consider a national treasure. The greatest to ever play the game have won here – Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Tom Watson. Even Babe Didrikson Zaharias and Patty Berg won the Weathervane Transcontinental Women’s Open at Pebble Beach in 1950 and ’51, not long after the LPGA was formed. They’d be shocked to learn it took this long to get invited back.”
    • “Players in this week’s field likely never dreamed of playing a U.S. Women’s Open at Pebble when they were McKayla’s age because it had never been done before.”
    • “In fact, most of the top players in the women’s game had never played Pebble, even in a casual setting, prior to their preparations for this week. Lydia Ko came earlier this spring with her husband for their first peek. Nelly Korda saw every hole for the first time Monday. Michelle Wie West played nine holes for the first time at media day in May and the rest last week.”
    Full piece.

    3. Blixt fires 62

AP Report…”Jonas Blixt got hot on the back nine at TPC Deere Run on Thursday, playing his last six holes in 6 under for a 9-under 62 and a 2-shot lead over Grayson Murray in the first round of the John Deere Classic.”

    • “Murray was 8 under through 13 holes but stalled from there. He bogeyed his final hole and shot 64. Cameron Young, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 19, also closed with a bogey and was part of a big group 3 shots back.”
    Full piece.

    4. USWO pay bump

Kent Paisley for Golf Digest…”The USGA announced Wednesday that the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open purse is going up to $11 million, a $1 million raise from 2022. It’s now double the size of the purse of the 2021 championship and the largest prize money payout in women’s golf.”

    • “Talking about 12 hours of network TV and playing for $11 million, some things are better than what you dream of,” said USGA CEO Mike Whan. “When you go back 10 or 15 years ago, those are pretty big moments, and I hope that all of us aren’t both so callused and in a hurry and iPhone-driven that we’ve missed that kind of breakthrough moment.”
    • “This week’s winner at Pebble Beach will earn $2 million, up from the $1.8 million prize money payout Minjee Lee claimed a year ago at Pine Needles.”
    Full piece.

    5. Coming to an airport near you…

Golf Digest’s Joel Beall…”LIV Golf has found a home for its Friday broadcast coverage. Although fans can’t be at their home to see it.”

    • “LIV announced Thursday morning that it reached an agreement with ReachTV, a streaming service that caters to airports. LIV Golf’s Friday coverage had previously only been available through the CW’s streaming app. According to a press release, the agreement begins this week with LIV Golf’s London event.”
    • “This partnership with ReachTV provides additional opportunities for fans on the move to follow LIV Golf’s supercharged action, including live coverage of Friday competition in bars and restaurants throughout North America,” said Will Staeger, LIV Golf’s chief media officer. “Our league is continually looking for innovative ways to connect the sport that we love with new audiences, and this partnership will give travelers more chances to catch many of golf’s biggest stars in action.”
    Full piece.

    6. Caitlin Clark tees off in John Deere pro-am

Dargen Southard of the Des Moines Register…”If the last year has hammered home anything regarding Caitlin Clark’s current celebrity status, it’s that crowds will show wherever No. 22 goes. Hoops doesn’t even have to be on the agenda.”

    • “Non-basketball appearances, inside the ballpark, on the golf course — doesn’t matter. Clark fans will flock from every corner to catch a glimpse of the Hawkeyes’ homegrown superstar doing anything ordinary or extraordinary. That proved true once again Wednesday at the John Deere Classic Pro-Am at TPC Deere Run.”
    • “With a robust gallery resembling what the leader’s group produces on championship Sunday at this well-respected PGA Tour event, Clark weaved her way through 18 holes while linking up with Iowa’s favorite golfing son, Zach Johnson, on the back nine. Throngs of black and gold lined the ropes at every hole just as they do outside the Carver-Hawkeye Arena tunnel. Many of the fans were young girls in Clark apparel yearning for even a brief moment with arguably America’s most popular female athlete. Autographs and photos were abundant.”
    Full Piece.

    7. Bubba thinks Gooch should get RC pick

Paul Higham for Golf Monthly…”Talor Gooch’s prolific winning form in the LIV Golf League should be enough to “definitely” make the USA Ryder Cup team, according to Bubba Watson.”

    • “Two-time Masters champion Watson is Gooch’s team captain with the Range Goats in LIV Golf, and he believes his fellow American is playing well enough to get one of Zach Johnson’s six picks for Rome.”
    • “Gooch is the only three-time LIV Golf tournament winner after claiming the trophy at Valderrama last week, and is again among the favourites for this week’s event at Centurion.”
    Full Piece.

    8. DQ at Pebble Beach

Brentley Romine for Golf Channel…”Natthakritta Vongtaveelap’s first U.S. Women’s Open is over after just five holes.”

    • “The 20-year-old Thai was disqualified after her caddie was found to have used a distance-measuring device “at least a couple times,” according to USGA rules official Kathryn Belanger. While the penalty for using a rangefinder once is two shots, multiple infractions result in disqualification.”
    • “Vongtaveelap was even par through five holes.”
    • “Rangefinders have been allowed at most LPGA events since mid-2021, but they remain prohibited at the U.S. Women’s Open.”
    Full Piece.

Natthakritta Vongtaveelap was competing in her first U.S. Women’s Open when her caddie used a distance measuring device multiple times during the round.  USGA rules official Kathryn Belanger made the disqualification.

It’s likely that the 20-year-old Vongtaveelap was mixed up because range finders are allowed at most LPGA events, but still remain illegal at the U.S. Women’s Open.

Vongtaveelap was even par through at the time she was disqualified.

Tiger Woods was likely not impressed with who played with Phil Mickelson at latest LIV pro-am https://www.golfwrx.com/717990/tiger-woods-was-likely-not-impressed-with-who-played-with-phil-mickelson-at-latest-liv-pro-am/ https://www.golfwrx.com/717990/tiger-woods-was-likely-not-impressed-with-who-played-with-phil-mickelson-at-latest-liv-pro-am/#comments Fri, 07 Jul 2023 09:27:47 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=717990 Tiger Woods is unquestionably one of the staunchest supporters of the PGA Tour.

The 15-time champion has also been one of the most vocal anti-LIV players, and one of his own major backers has, in the past, confirmed their own denial of the rebel league.

Hero MotoCorp are not only sponsor a range of events on the DP World Tour, but also provide huge backing to Tiger’s own tournament, the Hero World Challenge, won in the last two years by Viktor Hovland.

Previous winners also include Henrik Stenson, Bubba Watson and Graeme McDowell, all now committed to the Greg Norman-led tour, and all taking part in LIV London that starts on Friday.

As usual, the practice rounds took place on Thursday, and golf news site @NUCLRGOLF tweeted about one particular group – Phil Mickelson and Dr. Pawan Munjal, the CEO of Hero MotoCorp.

Last October, Hero decided to drop its sponsorship of Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri after he decided to jump ship to LIV, the irony being that his seventh and last professional victory was at the Indian Open, sponsored by Hero.

So, what was Dr, Munjal doing at Centurion Club? It may well have been a day out, being escorted around by the richest backers in world sport, or it might just have contained an ulterior motive.

With LIV set to be part of the new joint PGA/PIF/DPWT regime, and having mentioned team sponsorship many times in the past year, are we about to witness the first purchase?

It will be fascinating to see what Tiger makes of the impending news.

Rickie Fowler reveals the main element he worked on with Butch Harmon to help him win again https://www.golfwrx.com/718145/rickie-fowler-reveals-the-main-element-he-worked-on-with-butch-harmon-to-help-him-win-again/ https://www.golfwrx.com/718145/rickie-fowler-reveals-the-main-element-he-worked-on-with-butch-harmon-to-help-him-win-again/#comments Fri, 07 Jul 2023 09:27:08 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=718145 There won’t be many more popular wins than Rickie Fowler‘s victory at last week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Fowler’s first win since the 2019 Phoenix Open ended a four-year period where he dropped from the world top 10 to outside the top 150 at one point.

Finishing the year outside of the top 100, his return to form, at almost the same time as good friend Jason Day, has been one for the good guys. It will certainly be a long time before he or his many fans forget the outcome of that three-man playoff.

Soon after his remarkable win, Fowler discussed with Smylie Kaufman the changes he and Butch Harmon had made to his swing, and how he felt when he realized he was in the running late on Sunday.

Speaking on The Smylie Show yesterday, Fowler admitted he was confident about his game all through the week until he got to Sunday with the lead.

“I actually felt like more anxious, more antsy, going into Sunday’s round in Detroit at Rocket,” he said. “I felt very good about the golf course in LA. I felt really comfortable around there. I’d been hitting irons really well. I drove it plenty good enough throughout the whole week to give myself those chances to take advantage…the irons and made plenty of putts and got to Sunday. And, you know, Butch mentioned afterwards timing and stuff just got a little off and little out of rhythm, but irons just weren’t as tight. And really didn’t make many putts.”

“For some reason Sunday [at the Rocket Mortgage], just a little antsy, a little anxious, just needed to get myself settled down. … That was all more that just kind of started on the range and just was feeling it a little bit. In a good way, too. That’s why you want to be in those situations. So big thing, just talked to Brett, a guy that I’ve done some stuff on the mental side with. I was able to touch base with him when I was hitting some putts before going to the tee.”

It’s only nine months or so since Fowler sacked former coach John Tillery, and returned to Harmon, his coach for a period through the mid-2010s.

It’s been a relatively short process, even if Fowler took time to bed in his revised swing.

“I mean, the biggest step was when I got a little time to talk with Butch and start working on some stuff before Napa (Fortinet Championship). And I went out to Napa feeling, I wouldn’t say uncomfortable, but I didn’t feel comfortable with where the swing was and how it felt because it was pretty foreign and new,” Fowler admitted on the podcast.

“And I just went there and continued to trust and exaggerate as much as I could while actually playing. It’s one thing what you can do and exaggerate on the range, but when you’re actually out on the course it’s a little harder to exaggerate. So that week, seeing the shots I was able to produce, how tight the lines were…I think that was obviously the first big step was seeing kind of some results and feedback to mentally help myself kind of build some confidence, momentum and then went from there. Didn’t play great in Vegas, but ended up in the final group and finishing second in Japan. That was the start. And that gave me something to go into our little offseason to work on, continue to grind. And that’s what put me in the position to go to the West coast and then move from there.”

Kaufman asked if it had been the “same stuff the whole time that y’all have worked on?”

“Yeah, for the most part,” said Fowler. “Some different feels here or there but ultimately cleaning up the takeaway to that kind of first parallel and then getting…”

The most recent PGA Tour winner explained what his main issue had been.

“Well, my tendency is the club gets outside the hands,” he demonstrated. “So from there it’s hard to keep the club out in front of you and ultimately have it in a good position at the top. A lot of times for me, it would be outside and then tip over as far as getting laid off.”

“So,” asked the host, ” just felt behind? like you just always felt a little stuck from there, or just playing catch up?”

“Yeah, it was,” admitted Fowler. “I would say that that area is what felt in a way comfortable, because that’s where I was always at. So getting into a steeper left arm plane and the club being closer to down the line at the top, you know, that felt very up and across the line.”

Rickie Fowler, his new putter, golf and mental coach on side, next appears at the Scottish Open, an event he won in 2015. A week later, he will be all guns blazing in an effort to win his first major, at Hoylake, where in 2014 he finished tied-second behind Rory McIlroy.

With previous Open Championship finishes of second, fifth, and sixth, and with confidence in abundance, it would be tough to ignore his claims.

You can listen to the full podcast here.

The five-time major champion said he’s “given up on” the 24-year-old Wolff.

LIV Golf surely had high expectations for the former Oklahoma State star, but he’s disappointed so far on LIV, particularly this season. In his past five starts, he hasn’t finished better than 34th, and had to withdraw at LIV DC due to an undisclosed injury.

There were reports of a rift between Koepka and Wolff after Wolff’s WD, with rumors swirling that Wolff would be changing teams to satisfy Koepka.

“I’m here, you know, trying to do what I can to play the best round of golf and that’s going to help the team,” Wolff told Sports Illustrated. “I’m just here to focus on myself and try to play some good golf and that’s what everyone’s really trying to do, because golf is trying to put the best score up and then if that helps your team it’s great.”

When SI asked if Wolff wants to play for another team, he walked away without answering.

An offseason could give the duo time to mend fences, but as of now, it appears Wolff will be playing for a different team in 2024.

Smash GC and the rest of the LIV Golf roster are set to tee it up Friday at Centurion Club outside of London for the second consecutive year.

Phil Mickelson shared the thread from his Twitter account, saying “This thread is a long and accurate FULL truth(not half truth) of the LIV/PGA Tour agreement if you’re interested. Well done BobBall and thank you.”

As Phil mentions, the thread is long and covers what the deal would entail. “Ball” claims that the PGA Tour players will be left in a difficult position if the proposed merger doesn’t go through.

“You are all in trouble & screwed if you don’t support the Framework agreement. I’ve signed similar frameworks with institutional capital, so I also want to tell you what’s really going on with the agreement.”

Mickelson is set to tee it up for LIV London tomorrow at Centurion Club.

    Morning 9: Wie West’s last hurrah | Garcia fails to qualify for Open | Block clarifies Rory comments https://www.golfwrx.com/718005/morning-9-wie-wests-last-hurrah-garcia-fails-to-qualify-for-open-block-clarifies-rory-comments/ https://www.golfwrx.com/718005/morning-9-wie-wests-last-hurrah-garcia-fails-to-qualify-for-open-block-clarifies-rory-comments/#comments Thu, 06 Jul 2023 13:15:03 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=718005

Good Thursday morning, golf fans, as day one of the John Deere Classic gets underway.

    1. Wie West officially retiring at  Pebble

Golf Channel’s Mercer Baggs…”This is it. The last one, according to the 33-year-old. “I’m going to put my clubs in the darkest corner of my garage,” she said.”

    • “She’s been eyeing this event for some time now. Pine Needles, site of last year’s championship, would have been the perfect place to go out, so near to Pinehurst where she won her lone major.”
    • “But a Pebble Beach Open is the ultimate. And, for Wie West, this will be her ultimate event…”
    • “I really, really wanted to play longer. I really wanted to – especially after having Makenna and her being a girl, I really wanted to play longer,” Wie West said. “In an ideal world I wish I was still out on Tour and playing.
    • “Unfortunately, it’s just I had to make a hard decision with my body. It is hard. It is hard to be a mom out here. You have to make a lot of sacrifices. I just had to make a hard, medical body decision and also a personal decision.”

    2. Sergio misses out on Open qualifying

An ESPN report…”Sergio Garcia’s quest to play in his 25th straight Open Championship ended Tuesday when he failed to qualify for the season’s fourth major.”

    • “Playing in a qualifier at West Lancashire Golf Club, Garcia shot a 5-under 67 in the morning round of the 36-hole competition. But after taking the lead at 8 under following three birdies in the first six holes of the second round, Garcia couldn’t keep up the pace.”
    • “Garcia, 43, hit his drive into the rough on the par-4 seventh hole and he wound up with a bogey on his way to a 71 and a cumulative 6-under par.”
    • “He finished tied for sixth after 36 holes, with only the top five finishers qualifying for The Open, which begins July 20 at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Merseyside, England.”
    Full piece.

    3. Cam Smith likes lighter schedule, says “team golf is here to say”

Cameron Jourdan for Golfweek…”Last year, LIV had eight events and moved to 14 this year. In addition to the reported signing-bonus money and boosted purses, a lighter schedule is why numerous pros said they left the Tour for LIV.”

    • “Smith agrees. He’s a fan of a lighter schedule.”
    • “Exactly like it is this year would be perfect for me, 14 and four majors, I’d take that for the rest of my career,” Smith said.
    • “Then Smith was asked about comments Nick Faldo made last week about whether LIV would survive in the future and remain part of the golf ecosystem. Safe to say he’s confident in the future of the league.”
    • “I really can’t see LIV Golf going away. I think team golf is here to stay, and if you asked every one of us out here, all the 48 guys, I think everyone has such a good time and everyone enjoys what they’re doing out here, they love the competition. That team element really brings three or four guys really close that perhaps weren’t before.

    4. Block on McIlroy comments

Ben Fleming for Golf Monthly…”However, speaking exclusively to Golf Monthly at Dundonald Links this week ahead of Open Final Qualifying, Block was keen to clarify what he actually meant.”

    • “It was totally misconstrued, misconceived, the whole thing. I really feel like if you’re a real golfer, you kind of understood what I had meant,” he said.
    • “That was an incomprehensible thing where yeah, if I gained 60 yards, if I had a gap wedge into every green rather than a four iron into every green, would I be better? I’d be a whole hell of a lot better.
    • “Would I be better than Roy McIlroy? Absolutely not. Rory is an absolute stud and at no point, in any shape or form, was I ever trying to say anything about Rory or the tour professionals.
    • “I was just one hundred per cent saying, if I had an extra 60 yards off of every tee, every day of my life, would I be on tour? Probably. Guaranteed? Absolutely not.
    • “I know I can’t say I don’t care what people say or think – of course I do – but, at the same time, I understand what I meant, and I know for a fact, I didn’t mean to hurt anybody or say anything that would.
    • “It was taken completely out of context but is also my fault, I guess. I said it the wrong way. I did a couple of thousand interviews [after the tournament] but I guess I did say one thing wrong but it’s okay.”
    Full piece.

    5. Butch: Rickie’s win means the most

Our Matt Vincenzi…”Legendary swing coach Butch Harmon has coached Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson during the peaks of their careers, but none of their wins have meant more to him than Rickie Fowler’s win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week.”

    • “While appearing on PGA Tour Radio’s “Gravy and the Sleeze,” hosted by Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz, on Monday, Harmon reflected on the moment.”
    • “It was spectacular. I think my anxiety was probably the same level as his was when he was playing, just because I wanted it for him so bad,” Harmon said. “To come from 185th in the world all the way to 23rd in eight months is an incredible journey that he’s taken.”
    • “And guys I’ll be honest with ya,” Harmon continued. “I think this one meant more to me personally than a lot of the majors that I’ve won with different guys, just ’cause I know how far down Rickie was, and to watch him come back, it was a joy to watch.”

    6. Migliaccio reporter-player at USWO

Golf Channel’s Mercer Baggs…”Migliaccio is not only competing this week, she’s working as an on-course reporter.”

    • “Tuesday, Lexi Thompson was part of her practice foursome. Thursday, she’ll be part of Migliaccio’s featured group coverage on Peacock.”
    • “Migliaccio will be on the course for Thompson, Nelly Korda and Jin Young Ko for their 8:50 a.m. PT start on the 10th hole.”
    • “She won’t be able to wrap up the group, however, as she tees off alongside Alice Hewson and Kana Mikashima at 1:18 p.m. off the first.”
    • “They’ll let me leave when I feel comfortable doing so and I’ll have a cart, so hopefully won’t have to walk too much. But it should be great,” she said. “I’m really excited to get to see, you know, three of the best players in the world play golf and just seeing how it’s playing for them, then getting to go out in the afternoon and getting to try to replicate that.”

    7. Tim Tucker back on Bryson’s bag for the week

Cameron Jourdan for Golfweek…”Two years ago this week, Tim Tucker quit working for his boss, Bryson DeChambeau, the night before the 2021 Rocket Mortgage Classic, a tournament where DeChambeau was the defending champion.”

    • However, the tandem is back together this week.
    • Tucker is back on the bag for DeChambeau at this week’s LIV Golf event in London at Centurion Club, DeChambeau’s agent, Brett Falkoff, confirmed to Golfweek. Tucker caddied for DeChambeau in all eight of his PGA Tour victories and was on the bag for Kurt Kitayama’s first Tour win this spring at the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational.
    • DeChambeau’s caddie, Greg Bodine, is attending to a personal matter this week, which is why Tucker and DeChambeau are back together. No Laying Up first reported the pair joining up in London.

    8. Zach hints at Ryder Cup inclusion for LIV pros

John Turnbull for Bunkered…”US Ryder Cup captain Zach Johnson has hinted that he will select LIV golfers for his team this September.”

    • “Before the PGA Championship, the 47-year-old admitted that the prospect of those players featuring in Rome was “not even a discussion item.””
    • “But Johnson has now acknowledged that LIV golfers are eligible to make his team of 12 for the biennial battle with Europe.”
    • “He said: “These guys that left the PGA TOUR that had status and left to play on that other tour, the LIV Tour, they’re still members of the PGA of America, so they are still able to garner points.”
    • “They’re able to play in the PGA Championship as a result, because that’s what the PGA of America runs.”
    • “(They) obviously, technically, can still be a part of Team USA.”

Major golf publication blasted for ‘insensitive’ Bryson DeChambeau post https://www.golfwrx.com/717992/major-golf-publication-blasted-for-insensitive-bryson-dechambeau-post/ https://www.golfwrx.com/717992/major-golf-publication-blasted-for-insensitive-bryson-dechambeau-post/#comments Thu, 06 Jul 2023 10:32:57 +0000 https://www.golfwrx.com/?p=717992 On Wednesday, the Golf.com Twitter account posted a picture of Bryson DeChambeau with the caption “Presented without comment.”

    Image

The tweet was eventually deleted hours later, after several users had labeled the post “insensitive,” but not before the origin of the picture was revealed.

DeChambeau was working with the England & Wales Blind Golf for a charity event prior to teeing it up at LIV London this week. He was wearing goggles that prevented him from seeing in order to put himself in the shoes of a blind or vision-impaired person playing golf.

I spoke to the England & Wales Blind Golf and International about the (now deleted) tweet mocking Bryson.

“I was extremely sad to hear about [the tweet]. Today, Bryson gave all blind golfers across the world hope that our peers understand the journey many have gone through and going through. The mental health hurdles both for the individual but also for the families behind them. It’s easy for many to mock and think this will never happen to them, but every day 250 people in the UK start to lose their sight and the statistics are even higher across the world, and many golfers give up the game because they no longer can see the flight of the ball etc. Yet in truth golf has saved many blind people’s lives by giving them a goal and bringing people together.”

“England & Wales Blind Golf and International Blind Golf can’t thank Bryson, Charles and Liv Golf enough for helping us try to reach a world audience, and hopefully more professionals will help our aim to give more people and families hope through the mental impact of sight loss. We look forward to working with team Crushers impacting on people’s lives and those family members around them for the better.”

The issue is near and dear to DeChambeau, whose father lost his eyesight due to diabetes.

England and Wales blind golf is hoping that Golf.com is “big enough to get behind the drive to raise awareness rather than take cheap shots at those trying to keep as many people as possible playing through sight loss and give those around them hope.”
